Phnom Kulen & the Reclining Buddha

A small wooden pagoda is located on the tip of a sandstone rock, at the summit of Phnom Kulen. Housed inside it and directly carved into the sandstone lays a 9 meter long reclining Buddha. Traveling monks and local pilgrims line up to pray at the feet of the impressive statue.

The carvings that can be seen on the riverbed symbolize intervened man and woman sexual organs and are believed to purify the water that flows through.

Phnom Kulen is considered by the Khmers as the most sacred mountain in Cambodia. Most stones used to built the Angkor region temples come from here. A river with numerous carvings of lingas in its bed break into a large waterfall after a few bathing areas.
